Fall into a cleaner, healthier yard this autumn!

The time has come once again for fall cleanups! Last year due to an early snowfall we couldn’t get to all the fall clean ups scheduled. They’re predicting an even worse winter this year, so give us a call to make sure your yard gets the care it needs to weather the season!!!

What goes in to a fall clean up? While it’s important to removed leaf fall to maintain a proper ph in your soil, it’s more than just leaves! Now is the time to plant spring bulbs, remove dead limbs and trim branches that might fall and cause damage to your property in an especially heavy winter storm. Last year we received almost 40 inches of snow from Storm Nemo alone, so it’s important to show your yard some preventive care before the season hits. We offer a range of services, including mulch installation, leaf removal, as well as bulb planting and limb trimming. Give us a call and set up an appointment for a free estimate for services unique to your own needs.

We at Algiere’s love our customers, and we love our fellow local businesses. With that in mind, we’re offering a special coupon for 25 dollars off 3 hours of service, but you can only pick up these special coupons at the Norwichtown People’s Bank location. Water Management

In the summer time, when we can have days and days of extreme heat, it’s very important to maintain water supplies for your lawn and garden. What can you do when water supplies are low or the rain is refusing to fall? There are lots of DIY projects you can do to keep your landscaping happy and healthy.

Water Barrel

Rain barrels are an easy fix, you can find rain barrel kits at Lowes or Home Depot or make them on your own using plans on Youtube or the DIY network. Plan for the summer all year long, using fifty five barrels to store plenty of water for the dry months, just make sure to include drainage holes near the top for overflow.

Another great way to control your water needs is to use container gardening. Planting in containers will limit the amount of water you need. Containers don’t need to be expensive either, you can get creative and use discarded building supplies, like gutters, which are very popular right now.

Gutter Garden

Summer time is vacation time, but don’t feel like you have to stay at home to water the plants. Fill 2 liter soda bottles or wine bottles with water and revert them into the ground nearby where you need water most. Your plants will soak up what they need leaving you to enjoy your free time and the gorgeous weather!

Don’t have time to do it yourself? Give us a call at Algiere’s! We’ll put a plan together for you and help you keep up a routine of water management all year long.

Who’s Blogging Anyway?

Who’s Blogging Anyway?

While you read the latest Algiere’s blog, Ben is in your backyard, putting in your brand new patio. Michelle has just stopped by to drop off his lunch and hand you an invoice. Before she leaves, she tells you that Jenn is taking pictures of a new flower bed Algiere’s just installed at the local high school. It makes you wonder, just who is writing these great posts?

Mystery solved!

Well, wonder no more. Helen R. Peterson, poet, author, and professional blogger, has been a friend of Michelle’s since college. They met in a poetry class at Eastern, and as the two oldest students in the class, immediately bonded. Eight years later, Michelle travels with Helen and handles the sales of her new book, Melons and Memory, and Helen writes the Algiere’s Landscaping blog for Michelle.

In addition to the Algiere’s blog, Helen writes a weekly blog to support her writing career, (http://mspetersonexplains.wordpress.com/ ) and one to promote her Etsy shop, Vintagepoetic (http://vintagepoetic.wordpress.com/ ). She’s currently working on her second book of poetry as well as her first novel.

Algiere’s Landscaping is devoted to promoting local creative and talented people on their staff, like Helen and Jenn. If you like the work we do here on the blog and on the Facebook page, take a look at what we do in our spare time. Thank you!

May 13, 2012 Happy Mother’s Day!

Deutsch: Blüten eines weißen Flieders (Syringa...

Lilacs make a pleasant addition to a memorial garden.

With Mother’s Day this weekend and Father’s Day coming up in June, many people whose loved ones have passed away wonder what they can do to celebrate their lives in a special way. Algiere’s Landscaping has the solution. Why not give us a call and allow us to help you design and plant a memorial garden?

The beauty of a memorial garden is that it can be designed to bloom around you loved one’s special day each year. There are no set rules, you can include plants and other effects that remind you of your parent, spouse, or child. You could for example include flowers that were their favorite color, use stones or shells or other items that remind you of a special trip. Did your mother use a certain perfume, did the linens in your house growing up smell of lilac or lavender? Include a lilac bush or a plot of lavender. Was your father’s spaghetti sauce the talk of the neighborhood? Why not include some tomato plants, using old sauce pots as planters?

The possibilities are as endless as your imagination and memories. Ben can help you make your ideas a reality, by using his expertise to arrange plants and elements such as a bench or fountain while keeping proportions and seasons in mind. That way, you’ll have a memorial that will last year after year with proper maintenance.
